The Western Riviera is characterized by vertical rocky mountains that mark a boundary, which is not only administrative, between the Veneto and Lombardy Region, but also geological. Only in the last century, man has managed to overcome the obstacle of the mountains and pierced the rocks creating 50 galleries that offer a thrilling experience on the lake.
Arco and the Lakes’ Valley
The Trentino region is well known for the stunning beauty of its numerous lakes and its dramatic rock faces, which tower high above the lush green river valley below.
Medieval castles, crystal clear lakes, steep canyons and ice age wells are located in the midst of this ever changing landscape. Backdrops of vineyards and alpine forests provide various shades of green, whilst the rocky peaks and boulders above provide contrasting darker tones of grey.
From the shore of Lake Garda we head northwards towards historic Arco, best known to rock climbing enthusiasts for its steep rocky walls and free-climbing international competitions. The famous German painter Albrecht Dürer on one of his water colours captured this wonderful landscape of olive groves on one hillside, facing towards the dark scattered rocks on the opposite slopes. Crowning this beauty at the top of the hill is a medieval tower with frescoes.
This renowned resort town has always been a favourite haunt of poets and aristocrats, including the King of the Two Sicilies, Francesco II of Bourbon, after his dethronement by the national hero of Italy, Giuseppe Garibaldi. And one of the heirs of the monarchical dynasty, Archduke Albrecht Hapsburg-Teschen, built his residence in Arco and established a wonderful botanical garden, with exotic plants and sequoias which are typically rarely found in Europe.
Surrounded by gentle rolling hills carpeted by olive groves, Arco boasts a unique combination of Italian and Austrian architecture, blending the charm of an old medieval settlement with the grandeur of Habsburg influences. The Sarca river valley leads us into one of Trento’s best wine regions where you can sample the "Nosiola" white variety and the better known dessert wine "Vin Santo". An optional visit to a local distillery can be arranged where you can try the grappa and the local wines, and indulge in the local cuisine such as grilled trout, fresh out of the river!!
Perhaps the most outstanding jewels in the crown of this region are the four lakes of Toblino, Santa Massenza, Terlago and Cavedine. Lake Toblino particularly stands out for its landmark peninsula and medieval castle. And if you would like to take a closer look inside the depths of the mountains, there are kilometre long tunnels connecting a hydroelectric power station, in the village of Santa Massenza, with the glaciers of the Trentino peaks.
Taking the picturesque Stoppani route, we will see how the rocks and mountains were formed during the ice age. Of particular interest is the large well of the ice age called Pojeti, at the bottom of which the huge boulders that created it have remained. For those seeking an especially adventurous experience, I would recommend a walk into the Limaro Gorge, hiking and climbing the rocks through the canyon nearby to Drena Castle. Alternatively, you can enjoy a more leisurely bicycle ride taking a more gentle route for around 25 km along the river trails, through woodland and vines, taking in a multitude of beautiful landscapes.

Peschiera, Sirmione, Desenzano
The South Coast is separated from the Po plain by gentle hills and has been traveled since ancient times by soldiers, merchants and pilgrims who followed the via Gallica created by the Romans. Here the lake reaches its maximum amplitude and is connected to Venice and Milan, thanks to the railroad that offers the opportunity to reach by train two towns of lake Garda.
Riva del Garda and Torbole sul Garda
The northern part of the lake has long remained under the rule of the Prince Bishops of Trento and for more than a century was part of the Austrian Tyrol. It 'a very special area, enclosed by high mountains, marked by trenches and fortresses, vines and olive trees.
Tour by ferry
From Easter to late September ferries connecting opposite shores of the lake are the ideal way to visit the villages on Garda.
